I have 3 winkeyFinder questions!

Greetings!

I have 3 questions:
  • I’m running XP (of course) from DOS, a dir gives me a (VSN) Volume Serial # xxxx-xxxx
But when I check my VSN from WinkeyFinder I get xxxx-FFFF-xxxx

Which one should I use when I am using WinkeyFinder to change the VSN?

2 If I’m running XP, after activation back up & format can I install XP pro and
Activate it with data from XP I just backed up? Or does it have to be the same XP/version.

  • Is running an Fdisk OK? My XP software only installs on a blank/empty drive.

Re: I have 3 winkeyFinder questions!

Here are the Answers:
  • 1. I’m running XP (of course) from DOS, a dir gives me a (VSN) Volume Serial # xxxx-xxxxBut when I check my VSN from WinkeyFinder I get xxxx-FFFF-xxxx
ANS: What dir?? Volume Serial Number That Winkeyfinder shows is with Hex Value's Get rid of Hex values and I'm sure if you do it will match your VSN.

  • Which one should I use when I am using WinkeyFinder to change the VSN?
ANS: Both are fine as long as both have same VSN displayed, I prefer WKF (winkeyfinder) Try without HEX values, that is FFF.
  • 2 If I’m running XP, after activation back up & format can I install XP pro and Activate it with data from XP I just backed up? Or does it have to be the same XP/version.
ANS: They Need to be with Same CD key, That means A Home CD key is Different from a Pro and other version once CD key Changes the Data in wpa.dbl changes and hence activation restore will fail. That means answer is " NO ".
  • Is running an Fdisk OK? My XP software only installs on a blank/empty drive.
ANS: Yes a Clean Format using FDISK is fine as well, Remember WinXP Installation DVD/CD will have a format utility.

Re: I have 3 winkeyFinder questions!

Thanks for the Reply’s (Very helpful)

The first reply in reference to what dir? Let me clarify

In XP if I go in to (what I will call) simulated DOS I will get a command prompt C:\> If I type “dir” in the command prompt I will get (as you know) a list of directories that are in my C drive.

At the top of that list I also see “The Volume Serial is 30C3-C269” .I am looking at this number as a Hexadecimal i.e. 0h30C3C369

WinkeyFinder tells me “The Volume Serial of 30C3-FFFF-C369” I am looking at this number as a Hexadecimal i.e. 0h30C3FFFFC369

Thanks again for your feedback

Re: I have 3 winkeyFinder questions!

Yes If you just remove FFF, the numbers are same and Winkeyfinder and that xp tool are displaying almost same numbers.
Where Winkeyfinder is just adding a Hexa digit.
Regards.
